What Duolingo does well

Duolingo reported 58.7 million 7 daily active users and 12.7 million 7 paid subscribers in Q2 2026 7.

Streaks and a free-to-start, paid-to-continue plan. A Streak Revival event let learners restore their longest streak 7, and longer trial offers are a current revenue lever 7.

What changes for sign language

Sign language learners. ASL and BSL are separate languages, so a course for ASL does not teach BSL 8.

They need to watch fluent signers and practice with their own hands. Meaning sits in handshape, movement, location and facial expression, not in typed text 8.

What's the crossover

From DuolingoFrom Duolingo: the daily streak and a free tier that leads to a paid plan 7.

From sign languageFrom the market: video of fluent signers, and practice that uses the learner's hands and face, for a chosen sign language 8.

A streak-based daily sign language habit app. Because Lingvano and ASL Bloom already do this, the open angle is narrower: an under-served sign language, or a narrow job such as family members of a Deaf child learning together.

Demand check

Publish a signup page for the narrow angle, such as daily sign language for parents of a Deaf child, and share it in the parent groups you can reach. Over the next couple of days, count signups and replies against the visits. If almost nobody signs up, the existing apps already cover the need.

Build plan

  • Start: pick a sign language and an audience. Record a starter set of signs with a fluent signer you pay and credit.
  • Next: ship a web app with a daily lesson, a streak counter, and a short quiz where the learner picks the sign shown in a clip.
  • Then: add a reminder email and a simple paid plan behind a free opening unit.
  • After that: invite the signup list, watch streak retention, and fix the lesson where people drop off.

Copy the build prompt

Build a small web app for learning a sign language through a daily habit. Each lesson shows short video clips of a fluent signer, then asks the learner to pick which word a clip shows. Track a daily streak, show progress per unit, and send a reminder email when the learner has not practiced today. Keep the opening unit free and put later units behind a paid plan. Store users, lessons, streaks and plan status in a database. Use plain, accessible HTML with captions on every clip.

Risks and unknowns

  • Lingvano and ASL Bloom already sell this habit loop, so a general ASL app starts behind.
  • Lessons without fluent or native signers are likely to teach errors and lose trust.
  • Duolingo could add a sign language course; no announcement was found as of October 2026 8.
