What Goodreads does well
Goodreads launched in January 2007 5 and calls itself the world's largest site for readers. Its recommendation engine uses 20 billion 5 data points.
People track books they are reading, have read, and want to read, then see what friends are reading and write community reviews 5.
What changes for movies
Film viewers who want a social diary. Letterboxd grew from 1.8 million 6 users in 2020 6 to about 10 million 6 by November 2023 6.
They log films as they watch them, rate and review titles, and follow friends to see what those friends enjoy 3.
What's the crossover
From GoodreadsFrom Goodreads: a diary of what you consumed, plus a follow graph so friends' shelves are the recommendation engine 5.
From moviesFrom the market: log, rate, and review films, then follow people whose taste you trust 3.
A social film diary. Letterboxd already is that product, so a new app would need a narrower job, such as a diary for a single streaming catalog or a language the current leader does not serve.
Demand check
Publish a signup page for the narrow diary job and share it in the film groups you can reach. Count signups against visits. If almost nobody signs up, Letterboxd already covers the need.
Build plan
- Start: pick a narrow catalog and let people mark films watched, rate them, and follow other members.
- Next: ship a web app with a profile, a diary feed, and a watchlist.
- Then: add a reminder email when a followed member logs a film, and a simple paid plan behind extra stats.
- After that: invite the signup list and watch whether people keep logging after the opening week.
Copy the build prompt
Build a small web app where people keep a film diary. Each member can mark a film watched, give it a rating, write a short review, keep a watchlist, and follow other members. Show a home feed of followed diaries. Store members, films, diary entries, follows and plan status in a database. Use plain, accessible HTML.
Risks and unknowns
- Letterboxd already is the social film diary, so a general movie Goodreads starts behind.
- A catalog without licensed title data will look empty next to IMDb and Letterboxd.
- FlickTrackr already covers together-watching, so a swipe-to-pick-a-film night is also taken 4.
