What Uber does well
Uber launched teen accounts for ages 13 3 to 17 3 in May 2023 3, after earlier pilots in 2017 3 never got off the ground.
A family profile where parents invite a teen and live track each trip, and only highly rated, experienced drivers can accept 3. In Australia every teen trip needs a PIN 8.
What changes for kids
Families who cannot always drive their kids. In an Uber-commissioned survey, 58% 8 of Australian parents said their work schedule often stops them driving their teens to activities.
Parents need screened drivers and visibility of every trip. Drivers for teens in Australia must hold a Working with Children Check 8.
What's the crossover
From UberFrom Uber: on-demand booking, a vetted driver pool, and live tracking for the paying parent 3.
From kidsFrom the market: child-safety screening such as a Working with Children Check, and trip visibility for parents 8.
Rides for teens are taken at the platform level by Uber and Lyft. The open angle is a gap the receipts leave: children under the teen age floor, or a recurring route such as an activity center's after-school runs.
Demand check
Publish a signup page for a narrow route, such as after-school pickups from a local activity center, and share it with that center's parent group. Over the next couple of days, count signups and replies, and ask each parent which days they need. Stop if parents say a teen account or the school bus already covers them.
Build plan
- Start: confirm the local rules for driving minors and what screening drivers need. Talk to the activity center before anything else.
- Next: run the route by hand with screened drivers and a shared trip tracker before writing software.
- Then: build a parent booking page with recurring pickups, a trip status page, and a pickup code.
- After that: charge for a full term up front and track no-shows and late pickups.
Copy the build prompt
Build a web app for an activity center's after-school pickups. Parents create an account, add each child with a photo, and book recurring pickups by weekday. Each trip gets a pickup code the driver must confirm. Parents see a trip status page that moves from scheduled to picked up to dropped off, with timestamps. Admins assign screened drivers to trips and see a daily run sheet. Store parents, children, drivers, trips and status changes in a database. Do not show any child's details to drivers who are not assigned to that trip.
